The whole move was one sentence from Warsh

He declined to signal an October hike. The ten-year fell 10.5 basis points, October hike odds collapsed from near 50 at the intraday peak to roughly 15, and both boards reversed. Today is monthly expiration, which matters for the gamma question below.

Yesterday's plan, marked

The two-sided structure caught the move. My emphasis was wrong.

ES ran both pockets in sequence. The lower pocket triggered on losing 7741.50 and 7729, and the first target at 7721 hit with a low of 7717.50. Then it reversed. The upper pocket's first two targets at 7780 and 7808 were both reached overnight, with the overnight high at 7809. One paid below, two paid above.

THE NQ CALL WAS WRONG AND IT IS WORTH SAYING PLAINLY

I wrote that the whole session reduced to 29696 and that losing that shelf opened 719 points of air. The shelf lost. The air never opened.

Yesterday's low was 29626 and the overnight low was 29558, so price went roughly 140 points past the level and then reversed 670 points off it. None of the three lower targets were reached. Meanwhile the upper pocket paid all three, 30025, 30078 and 30214, with the overnight high at 30228.

The lesson is one I have written before and clearly have not fully absorbed. A break is not a direction. I correctly identified that 29696 was the decision point and then assumed the decision would go one way because that was the direction of the preceding move. The two-sided pocket structure is what saved the plan, not the analysis around it.

What actually happened at that level was a sweep. Price took out the stops beneath six stacked labels, found no supply, and reversed. That is a liquidity event, not a regime event, and the difference only becomes visible after the fact.

What happened

Warsh declined to signal an October increase. That is the entire reversal. The ten-year fell 10.5 basis points to 5.085 percent from a 24-year high of 5.36 last week. The thirty-year fell 9.8 to 5.426 from 5.73. The two-year came in 5.3 basis points to 4.749.

CME FedWatch now shows roughly 85 percent odds the Fed holds on October 28. On Wednesday afternoon that number was briefly pricing close to a coin flip. Three days, a full round trip in expectations, and none of the underlying inflation data changed.

Thursday's close was a rotation rally, not a tech rally. The Dow rose 1.08 percent and the Russell 1.38, while the S&P managed 0.33 and the Nasdaq 0.08. Consumer, health care and financials led. Tech recovered almost nothing.

The AI credit story paused rather than resolved. CoreWeave fell another 4.95 percent and its bonds still yield above 15 percent. TSMC dropped 4.14 percent despite a record quarter, with gross margin slipping to 66.4 from 67.7 on 2nm ramp costs. SK Hynix fell 6.74. A yield that high on the debt is the market saying it is not finished thinking about this.

And Bessent tightened the Iran screw. He said the noose is tightening on Iran's economy, with a naval blockade holding seaborne crude exports at zero since mid September. WTI is near $97. That keeps a floor under energy, which is the input that drove half of Wednesday's CPI headline.

Zero gamma below the trigger, and above it

Taking the question properly, because the answer changes how you read both boards today.

They measure two different things. Zero gamma is arithmetic: the price where aggregate dealer gamma across the book nets to zero. The volatility trigger is behavioral: SpotGamma's modeled level where dealer hedging is expected to flip from suppressing moves to amplifying them, weighted toward the strikes that actually drive hedging flow and accounting for the volatility surface rather than raw gamma alone.

Most of the time they sit close together and the trigger is above zero gamma. When they separate, the gap itself is the information.

THE NORMAL ORDER, WHICH IS ES TODAY

Trigger at 7808, zero gamma at 7747, 61 points apart with the trigger on top.

The behavioral flip leads the arithmetic one on the way down. Between 7747 and 7808 you are in a transition band: dealers are already hedging defensively but net gamma has not actually turned. Below 7747 both measures agree and the board is unambiguously amplifying. This ordering usually means the book is put-heavy underneath, which is exactly what you see here, with the put wall sitting at 7748.

THE INVERTED ORDER, WHICH IS NQ TODAY

Trigger at 30149, zero gamma at 30284, 135 points apart with zero gamma on top.

Here the arithmetic flip is above the behavioral one, which means reclaiming the trigger does not buy you a positive gamma regime. Net gamma is still negative until 30284. You have to clear both. The band between them is where the two measures contradict each other, and it is the lowest-conviction space on the board.

Why it inverts. It usually shows up after a violent repricing, when a lot of short-dated downside has been bought and the strikes driving hedging flow sit well below where the aggregate gamma balance is. That is a precise description of what NQ just went through.

THE RULE I WOULD USE

When price is below both levels, the real reclaim level is the higher of the two. When price is above both, the real break level is the lower of the two.

That is the conservative read and it works in either ordering. Applied today: ES needs 7808 and NQ needs 30284, not 30149. It also tells you where not to trade, which is the band between them on whichever board you are looking at.

And today is monthly expiration

A large slice of the open interest that produced both of those levels expires at the close. That cuts two ways and both are worth holding.

First, the NQ inversion is probably temporary. The short-dated downside bought during this week's selloff is a meaningful part of what dragged that trigger below zero gamma. When it comes off the board, the ordering may well normalize. Monday's map could look quite different from today's, and I would not carry today's geometry into next week without re-reading it.

Second, expiration days have their own behavior. Large strikes with heavy open interest tend to exert a pull into the close, and that pull has nothing to do with the macro. On ES the cluster at 7746 to 7748 and the call wall at 7948 are the two candidates. On NQ it is 29699 below and the 30284 to 30299 pair above.

Practically: be more skeptical of afternoon direction than usual, and expect the last hour to be about positioning rather than about Warsh.

Both walls firmed up

The NQ put wall held NDX 29,500 for a second session. That confirms it under the rule. It also survived a live test, since the overnight low at 29558 traded below it in futures terms and recovered.

The ES put wall stepped up again, SPX 7650 to 7700. That is now two consecutive moves in the same direction after six sessions pinned at 7500. Under the amendment I published on October 8, a consistent one-direction drift is a ratchet rather than a whipsaw and carries information that a flip-flop does not.

A put wall migrating up toward spot while price falls is open interest following the action. Dealers are writing protection closer to the money because that is where the demand is. It is the opposite of the degenerate call wall readings NQ has been producing, and it is one of the healthier things on either board right now.

Regime

ES is three points under its trigger and inside the transition band. Spot 7805, trigger 7808, with the overnight high at 7809 having poked a point through it. Zero gamma is 58 points below at 7747. By construction this is the lowest-conviction place on the board.

But ES is above yesterday's high. Spot 7805 against a prior-day high of 7802, with the whole overnight range of 7774 to 7809 sitting in the upper half of yesterday's range. After a session that printed 7717.50, that is real repair.

NQ is below both of its levels and needs 235 points to clear them. Spot 30049, trigger 30149, zero gamma 30284. It is also above the prior-day high of 30198 only on the overnight high, not on spot.

THE HARDEST SPOT ON THE NQ BOARD

The call wall sits at 30299, which is 15 points above zero gamma at 30284.

The exact price where NQ would finally get dealer hedging working in its favor is also where the largest call strike sits. That is a ceiling placed directly on top of the flip. Expect that zone to take real work and more than one attempt, and do not assume a first touch means it is through.

NQ's overnight range was 670 points. That is not a normal range and it is a reminder that nothing about this week has settled.

Execution

Neither board is in a tradeable regime right now and the maps say so explicitly. ES is sitting inside its transition band. NQ is below both of its flip levels with 235 points to go. These are the conditions where the honest answer is that the edge is in the resolution, not in anticipating it.

The reclaim levels are clean and close on ES. 7808 and 7809 are three and four points away. That is a cheap level to be wrong about, which makes it the better of the two boards to engage this morning.

Be careful about reading today's afternoon. Expiration pins and position unwinds will produce moves that look like conviction and are not. I would weight the first two hours heavily and the last hour barely at all.

The credit read comes this morning. Truist, M&T, Citizens, Regions and Travelers all report before the open, and regional banks are where consumer and commercial credit stress shows up first. After Wells provisioned 1.03 billion on Tuesday, this is the confirmation or the contradiction. Industrial production at 9:15 as well.

WHAT IS NOT RESOLVED

CoreWeave's bonds still yield above 15 percent and Iran's crude exports are still at zero under a naval blockade.

Warsh took the October hike largely off the table and that was worth a lot to equities this week. It did nothing to the AI financing problem and nothing to the energy input that drove half of Wednesday's CPI headline. Two of the three things that broke this week are still broken.

TL;DR

Warsh declined to signal an October hike and that was the whole reversal. The ten-year fell 10.5 basis points to 5.085 from a 24-year high of 5.36, and hold odds for October 28 are now near 85 percent. Thursday was a rotation rally with the Dow up 1.08 and the Russell 1.38 while the Nasdaq managed 0.08. On the gamma question: zero gamma is arithmetic and the volatility trigger is behavioral, and when zero gamma sits above the trigger, as it does on NQ by 135 points, reclaiming the trigger does not buy you a positive regime. Use the higher of the two as the real reclaim level, which means ES needs 7808 and NQ needs 30284, with a call wall 15 points above it. Yesterday's NQ call was wrong: the shelf broke and the vacuum never opened, and the two-sided structure is what saved the plan. Monthly expiration today, so today's geometry may not survive into Monday.

Nothing here is investment advice. Futures trading involves substantial risk of loss.
